Description

This is a late 18th or early 19th century house, now occupied by two shops. It is located on the south side of Godalming High Street. The building is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a concealed plain tile roof. It stands three storeys high, with a basement at the front. Originally three bays wide, the front now incorporates 20th-century shops. The basement shops project forward, with the right corner being canted and featuring wooden columns and an entablature. The shop fronts have recessed doors and a continuous small-pane overlight. The upper floors have sash windows in reveals, each with a flat brick arch and projecting sills. The ground floor windows are partly concealed by the shop addition; the windows to the ground and first floors have 12 panes, while those on the second floor have 6 panes. A parapet with flat stone coping hides a hipped roof, with two external stacks on each side. At the rear, the windows generally match those at the front, but the ground floor has 18-pane windows in the right-hand bays. The centre bay features a French window, sheltered by a swept, metal-roofed verandah. A single-storey addition projects from the left bay and is not considered of special interest. The right return has a central door leading to the property at number 91A. Above the door is a round-arched stair window with glazing bars. The chimney stacks are corbelled, and a weathered rainwater pipe hopper is present. The building possesses group value, contributing to the architectural character of the High Street.
