Description

The summer house, walls, and gate piers at Crooksbury House were designed in 1890 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The summer house is constructed of red brick and features a hipped plain tiled roof. The garden wall extends from the end of the house, enclosing the forecourt. It has a tile coping and curves down to square stone-capped gate piers, which are approximately 1.5 metres apart and stand on moulded plinths. The wall is about 1.5 metres high, with an offset and panelled design under the tile coping on the upper third. There are two pedimented and curved gates that lead to round steps at the left end, each arched gateway includes a keystone and impost blocks. The wall continues to the left and is attached to the end of the house. The right-hand gate pier, which is part of the main entrance, connects to a return wall leading to the square summer house, which has an acorn finial on the roof and an arched wooden door that faces the courtyard, accessible by a flight of steps. A lower wall runs southwards to enclose the west edge of the forecourt.
