Description
The Corn Barn at Cucksey's Farm is an early 18th-century corn barn. The roof covering was replaced in the late 20th century. It is timber-framed with exterior walls made of English bond brickwork, gable ends covered in corrugated iron, and a steeply pitched gabled roof that was likely originally thatched but is now covered in corrugated asbestos sheeting. The barn has a five-bay design with end aisles raised to full bay height, making it effectively seven bays.
The exterior features central double cart entrances on the north and south sides with 20th-century double doors. The east end has setback brick buttresses and a wooden pedestrian entrance, while the south side includes triangular brick buttresses. There is also a single-storey range dating from the early to mid-19th century at the southeast end.
Inside, the aisle posts are made from reused timbers set on padstones, some of which are brick and others concrete. The east end gable displays 18th-century framing with diagonal tension braces. The west end has similar framing but is obscured by a 20th-century internal partition. The roof structure includes angled queen struts with purlins, and while the principal rafters remain, the common rafters were removed, likely during the roof covering alteration. An inserted floor is present at tie beam level in the east end.
This barn is significant as an early 18th-century structure of an unusual design, retaining a considerable amount of its original fabric and forming part of a functionally related contemporary farm group.
