Description
The hay barn at Cucksey's Farm is an early 18th-century structure with minor alterations. It is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding, resting on a brick plinth. The roof is gabled to the north and half-hipped to the south, currently covered in corrugated iron sheeting, although some original thatch remains visible inside. The barn has a five-bay layout featuring a central threshing floor and an aisle to the west.
On the exterior, the weatherboarding is missing on the south side. There are central cart entrances with double doors on pintle hinges, with a taller entrance on the east side and a lower entrance on the west. Additionally, there is a pedestrian plank door on pintle hinges to the north of the central cart doors on the east side.
Inside, the aisle posts are supported on circular padstones that have been enlarged with concrete. All aisle ties are intact. The four upright posts flanking the cart entrance display a typical 18th-century curved and cut profile, while the other posts are unjowled, with some being rough hewn and retaining outer bark. The wall frame features a midrail and intact diagonal tension braces. The roof structure includes angled queen struts and purlins, with all rafters remaining intact. Some 20th-century secondary timbers and metal ties have been added to enhance the barn's wind resistance.
This barn is part of an early 18th-century farmstead that also includes the farmhouse and corn barn, making it significant as a well-preserved example of a timber-framed agricultural building from that period.
