Description
The Church of St Leonard is a church dating from the 13th century, with a 15th-century tower. It underwent significant restoration between 1870 and 1871 by architect Spencer, and a vestry was added in 1904 by H.A. Daniell. The church is constructed of knapped flint with stone dressings, featuring red stone in a herringbone pattern and brick banding courses on the south side. It has a banded plain tiled roof with ridge cresting and wooden shingles on the spire. The structure includes a square tower and spire at the west, an aisleless nave with a gabled porch to the south, and a chancel to the east with a vestry extension to the north. The windows consist of lancet styles in the chancel and tower, a Geometrical window on the north chancel wall, and a Perpendicular window on the south side under a hood mould with diamond-shaped stops, while the remaining windows are from the 19th century.
Inside, the church is simply whitewashed with stone dressings. It features a 15th-century tower arch and a 19th-century chancel arch. In the northeast corner of the chancel, there is a 13th-century column shaft with an upright lancet leaf capital, and another column with a stiff leaf capital in the southeast corner. Notable fittings include a triangular piscina with stiff leaf decoration on the east chancel wall, and a former parclose screen from around 1530 that has been cut down and repurposed as a chancel screen, featuring thick tracery and turned columns. The church also has a 13th-century stone font, which has a square bowl on a central stem with four corner shafts.
