Description

Notre Dame Convent School, formerly known as Batnors Hall, is a house that has been converted into a school. It was originally built in 1589, with a front that was reworked in 1718, and it was extended in 1883, with further extensions added to the rear left in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame set on a rubblestone plinth, with a front made of red and brown brick and plain tiled hipped roofs. It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical seven-bay front, with the central three bays recessed. The front includes a brick plinth, plat bands above the ground and first floors, gauged brick angle piers, and a panelled stone-coped parapet. The windows are 19th-century sash windows, all featuring gauged brick heads. The central window on the first floor has cut brick scalloped decoration, as does the central panel of the parapet. The lead hopper heads of the pipes at the angles of the front are dated 1718. The parallel brick extensions to the rear left are dated 1883, while the flat-roofed extensions to the left and rear left are not included in the listing.

Inside, the dining room has a ceiling frame and panelling, along with an Elizabethan style overmantel above the fireplace, which is decorated with strapwork and dated 1589. The main hall features a staircase with foliage and scroll carving on the tread ends and turned balusters.
