Description
Valley End War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is situated on Valley End Road, directly opposite the entrance to the church of St Saviour, which is also listed as Grade II. The memorial features a limestone wheel cross atop a tapering shaft, which rises from a stepped stone plinth. The initials ‘HIS’ are carved into the center of the cross's head.
On the south face of the plinth, there is an incised dedication that reads: "REMEMBER BEFORE GOD/ THESE MEN OF VALLEY END WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919/ “GRANT THEM THY PEACE O LORD”/ ALSO/ 1939-1945." The north face bears another incised inscription that states: "I HAVE FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT/ I HAVE FINISHED MY COURSE/ I HAVE KEPT MY FAITH." The east and west faces are inscribed with the names of ten fallen soldiers.
