Description

The Church of St Peter is a church built in 1825 by J.T. Parkinson, with alterations made in 1887 by T. Goodchild. It is constructed from coursed rough dressed sandstone with sandstone dressings and has slate roofs. The building has a rectangular box shape featuring a nave and aisles, a small square tower at the west end, and a vestry extension at the southeast corner. It is designed in the Perpendicular style, characterized by a short battlemented tower with a louvred opening at the top, which is set under label mouldings. Below this, there is an arched Perpendicular style west window, also under a hood moulding. The west end has aisle windows flanking the tower, with two-light designs under label mouldings. There are ten windows on the north and south sides, with the westernmost window blocked. Above, there are five arched windows, and below, five double arched windows, all under label mouldings. The east end features a pediment, and there are planked doors at the west end made of stone, with a two-centred arched surround and two foliage capital jamb shafts. A further door is located at the northeast angle.

Inside, the church has three arches across the west end and a gallery that wraps around three sides, supported by cast iron columns with leaf capitals. The nave has a flat wooden ceiling, which is coved over the galleries. There is a thin stone altar arch that reaches full height, adorned with marble columns and foliage capitals. The altar has an arcaded reredos and includes 19th-century fittings. An octagonal stone font rests on a moulded stem and a stepped plinth.
