Description

Public house, dating from approximately 1700, with later 19th-century additions and alterations. The main block is of approximately 1800 and constructed of brick, rendered on the front, with a tile and Welsh slate roof. A three-storey, three-bay section forms the centre, with a later 19th-century addition creating a top storey. To the left is a two-storey, two-bay extension. Behind the main block is a two-storey and attic range with roughcast brick framing dating from around 1700, which has been substantially altered and is now surrounded by later buildings.

The street front has three storeys in the centre, with end stacks, and two-storey extensions. Three 19th-century sash windows are on the second floor, with sills breaking into a dog-tooth band. A tripartite sash window is on the first floor to the left, and a single sash window to the right, featuring a 19th-century iron balcony decorated with ogee and intersecting tracery arcading in quatrefoil bands at both the top and bottom. Two angle bays are present on the ground floor. To the right, two Doric columns flank pilasters. A panelled double door is located to the right of the centre. The extension to the right has a corbelled and diagonally dentilled stack. One first-floor and two ground-floor sashes are visible. A further extension to the left contains two first-floor sashes which are not considered of special interest.

The rear wing displays a 12-pane sash window and two four-light gable windows, but is largely hidden from view.

Inside, several two-panel doors are present. The rear wing retains a contemporary roof structure, with paired rafters having halved and pegged apices. The main block and the older wing behind are specifically noted as being of group value.
