Description
The tomb of Count and Countess de Morella, located approximately 45 metres to the northeast of the north transept of Christ Church, is a memorial from the early 20th century. It commemorates Ramon Cabrera, Count de Morella and Marquis del Ter, who died in 1877, and his wife Marianne Catherine, who died in 1915. The tomb is made of polished grey granite and features a tall plain cross mounted on a four-step podium. The top step is adorned with a relief carving of Roman-style tools of war, including a helmet, sword, spear, shield, and laurel wreath. The face of the top step has a raised border and an inscription commemorating Ramon Cabrera, while the step below contains an inscription for his wife. Cabrera was a Carlist general during the Civil Wars in Spain from 1836 to 1843. He was ennobled by the pretender Carlos V and received praise from the Duke of Wellington for his military skills. After the defeat of the Carlists, he settled in England.
