Description
Cherry Hill is a house built between 1933 and 1936 by Oliver Hill for a Miss Newton. It is designed in the International Modern style and has a shallow curve in its plan. The building is constructed of white-rendered brick and features a flat roof. It stands two storeys tall.
On the north side of the entrance, there is a projecting semi-circular glazed staircase tower that rises the full height of the building. This tower contains a circular staircase with an iron handrail on the glazed side and a solid banister on the other. To the left of the staircase tower, there is a tinted cylindrical water tower that serves as a roof feature. A two-light casement window has been added to the first floor since the house was built, while the ground floor retains its original seven-light low casement window. The doorcase features a flat and wide weatherboard above it. To the right of the staircase tower, there is a low three-light casement window on the first floor.
The principal rooms are located on the south front to maximize sunlight and views. These rooms mainly feature three-light casement windows and a flat veranda supported by plain columns, which leads to a large sitting room. At the west end of the sitting room, there is a glazed screen that opens into a semi-circular sun room. Originally named Holthanger, this house is a notable example of Oliver Hill's modern style.
