Description

SU 96 NE EGHAM LONDON ROAD (off) The Battery Fort Belvedere (including 3/118 31 cannon gun battery)

Battery. 1827-28. Part of Sir Jeffrey Wyattville's transformation of the Duke of Cumberland's gothic style folly. Stone built, parapet crenellated for 47 guns, forming a wide arc to East of Fort Belvedere with 2 bastims overlooking Virginia Water. Intended for arcmanial salutes, etc. Built to accommodate the Duke of Cumberland's 31 fine brass cannon which was removed from Cumberland Lodge for that reason. The cannon was built at Woolwich 1729-49 by Andrew Schlagt and his subordinate Bowen and rest on iron gun carriages.
