Description
The Battery at Fort Belvedere, built between 1827 and 1828, is a stone structure that was part of Sir Jeffrey Wyattville's redesign of the Duke of Cumberland's gothic style folly. The battery features a crenellated parapet designed to accommodate 47 guns, forming a wide arc to the east of Fort Belvedere, with two bastions overlooking Virginia Water. It was intended for ceremonial salutes and was specifically built to house the Duke of Cumberland's 31 brass cannons, which were relocated from Cumberland Lodge for this purpose. These cannons were manufactured at Woolwich between 1729 and 1749 by Andrew Schlagt and his assistant Bowen, and they rest on iron gun carriages.
