Description
The Church of Jesus Christ and the Wisdom of God, located in Lower Kingswood, Tadworth, was built in 1891 by Sidney Barnsley in the free Byzantine style. The structure features red brick and stone arranged in various patterns, including chequer work, herringbone, and basketweave, topped with a plain tile roof. The church consists of an aisled nave and chancel combined into one, with a polygonal east end that has angled bay windows. The west front showcases a large planked and studded door framed with scalloped metal under a round arch that bears an inscription. Above the narthex is a stone dressed diocletion window beneath a pent roof, with round-headed lancets on the other facades and in the east end apses.
Inside, the church has a tiled floor and a marble centre aisle. The nave features a two-bay arcade with end piers and a central column, topped by a painted barrel vault roof. The chancel is also marble-floored, with a semi-circular apse adorned with marble lining and a green and gold floral mosaic in the apse and semi-dome. Notable fittings include an Arts and Crafts lectern, pulpit, and reading desk made of ebony and holly with mother of pearl inlay, as well as two priests' chairs with domed canopies. Byzantine capitals from Constantinople and Ephesus decorate the aisles and west wall.
A campanile is located five yards to the ritual northwest of the church. It has a square rendered plinth with an inset flight of steps, weatherboarded above, leading to an open timber bell chamber topped with a lead-covered ribbed Byzantine dome. Lead gargoyle animal spouts are positioned at the angles of the bell chamber. The campanile and church are connected by a herringbone brick path with stone edging and flint insets, which forms a circle in front of the west door.
