Description

This is a coal and wine tax post, likely dating from around 1861 and made by Henry Grissell. The metal structure stands approximately 4 feet high and features a four-legged plinth supporting a chamfered pier. Above the pier is a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. A City of London shield is displayed on the front, and lettering on the pier reads "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". The maker’s name is inscribed on the rear. The post marked the boundary at which duty was payable, referencing a coal tax that originated in the 1660s.
