Description
53 and 53A High Street is a hall house dating from around 1500, which has had its service end removed and its exterior altered. The building has one storey and an attic, featuring three windows. The front is finished in stucco with incised lines. It has a high-pitched roof covered with renewed clay tiles, which includes a long hip below a gablet on the left and a shorter lower extension. There are square-headed modern dormers and modern plain shop fronts below.
Inside, the building displays fairly heavy timber work, including jowled posts and large arch braces supporting the ties and plates. There are diagonal braces extending down to a half rail, with fairly close but somewhat irregular studding and slightly arched ties. The two-bay hall has a collar-purlin roof and a crown post with transverse braces to the ties and longitudinal braces to the purlin. The interior also features good carpenters' marks. On the ground floor, there are triple service doors with hollow-chamfered jambs and round arches, along with a similar doorway at the other end of the hall that has a flattened arch and moulded spandrels.
