Description

The Hoffman kiln at Betchworth Pits was built around 1867 by the Brockham Brick Company as part of its lime quarrying operations. This brown brick tower stands approximately 110 feet high and has a rectangular plan that tapers towards the top, featuring iron bands that secure the uppermost courses of brick. The southern side has an arched entrance, which is now mostly hidden by foliage, and the former oven is filled with debris. The kiln is part of a notable group of industrial buildings and was last used in 1901.
