Description

BROCKHAM BROCKHAM QUARRY 1. 5387 TQ 15 SE Brick Kilns at SP/483 TQ19885100 II 10/483

  1. Brick Kilns. Circa 1870. Rectangular plinth with originally 8 Kiln chimneys above. Brick. Plinth with brick dressed arches to the front giving access to the main firing chamber, approached along a sunken road. Built into a hillside, originally 8 kilns stood on the plinth, the majority in pairs with a large chimney tower between kilns 5 and 6. Now 7 of the 8 kilns have collapsed. The northermost kiln remains with its bottle shape, strengthened by iron ties, standing approximately 15 feet high. Part of a set of industrial buildings connected with the Brockham Brick Company which extracted limestone and hearthstone on the site. SURREY HISTORY 1 3 (1975) "Stone Mining in east Surrey" by P W Sowan pp83-94. The records of the Brockham Brick Company can be found at Surrey County Record Office.
