Description
Providence Chapel, erected in 1816 as "Charlwood Union Chapel," was relocated from Horsham and appears to date from around 1800. It is a single-storey structure with weatherboarding on a brick base and features a hipped slate roof with a brick chimney. The roof extends to form a verandah on the south-east elevation, supported by eight wooden columns. The chapel has three shuttered windows, a four-panelled door on the left side, and a central six-panelled door, with a central path made of Charlwood stone.
Inside, there are two vestries. The minister's vestry includes an early 19th-century fireplace with a reeded shelf. The octagonal pulpit located in the north-east corner has a pointed arched backboard, and the table pew features a square splay-sided table with flanking box pews, all dating from the early 19th century. This building is quite unusual, resembling more of a New England style than that typically found in Surrey.
