Description
Lowfield Heath Windmill is a post mill believed to date from 1762. It was moved from its original site, 2.5 miles away, in 1987 due to the expansion of Gatwick Airport and has been extensively restored. The windmill features a late 20th-century brick round house, with the original chamfered centre post to the trestle and three of the other four posts being original as well. The tailwheel is also from the late 20th century. The body of the windmill has many original timbers, but the weatherboarded cladding and the majority of the steps were renewed in the late 20th century. The front face includes two blocked windows and a Dutch door at the base, with a wooden pentice above. The sides have three openings with wooden cornices on brackets. The windshaft is original, but the one pair of sails present at the time of the survey is from the late 20th century.
