Description

Tanyard is a building dating from the 16th and 19th centuries, originally an open hall-house that retains part of its open hall along with the service and solar end. It is two storeys high, constructed with timber framing and stuccoed infill, and features a tiled roof with a 17th-century brick chimneystack. The right side of the building is a 19th-century addition that is of a higher elevation. The ground floor is stuccoed while the first floor is tile hung, and there are three casement windows in total, along with a simple doorcase. The floored-over hall was used as a Friends Meeting House, as the building and about 14 acres of land were bequeathed by Edward Taylor in 1683 to the Society of Friends, remaining in Quaker possession until 1934. Inside, the building contains exposed timbers and a restored ingle nook fireplace.
