Description

The stone causeway in the churchyard of St Nicholas is likely from the 17th century or earlier. It is approximately 5 feet wide and made of irregular slabs of Charlwood stone, designed to protect churchgoers from mud. This feature is referenced in the Parliamentary Survey of 1649-58, which notes that the area around the church was very muddy and difficult to navigate in winter.
