Description
Nos 81 and 83 The Street are two adjoining hall houses from the 15th century. A smoke bay was added in the late 17th century, and jetties were built out in the early 19th century. The houses are timber-framed with painted brick infilling on the east wall, while the rest of the ground floor is faced with red brick and painted tile above. The south front features a gable at the east end and has a tiled roof.
The buildings are two storeys high and have casement windows. There are three windows facing south and two windows facing east. A simple doorcase with a wooden hood on brackets is present. No. 81 was originally a hall house with three bays, measuring 15 feet long. It features a fine chamfered Crown post and remnants of arch braces to an open truss. There was originally a stair ladder leading to the solar bedroom, which jetted out over the service room below; this was later under-built in brick in the early 19th century. A smoke bay was inserted in the late 17th century, followed by the addition of a chimney. No. 83 has a Crown post roof, and its upright posts are heavily jowled, with a chimney added at the side.
