Description

The building is a sawmill workshop, constructed between 1860 and 1876, likely as a wind-powered sawmill for the Buckland Court Estate. It is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding on a brick plinth, featuring a half-hipped oak-shingled roof. The flat section of the roof is leaded and has a tapering cylindrical tower. The structure is square, measuring approximately 12 by 12 feet and stands two storeys high, with an additional storey that is 9 feet tall. The front of the building has two plank doors with iron hinges and four fixed casement windows. The right side includes a weatherboarded lean-to.

Inside, the wall frame displays cross-patterned timbers that may have been reused from the old parish church, which was rebuilt in 1860. Access to the first floor is via a ladder staircase, and another staircase leads to the tower. At the time of the survey, the shuttered sails, fantail, cog patterns, and other components were stored in a nearby garage. A metal plaque inscribed with "W Cooper Engineer Henfield" indicates that the structure dates from between 1860 and 1876, during which time he was a millwright. The components are in good condition, and it is believed that the structure was abandoned before it was fully assembled, making it a rare find. While there are at least three documented examples of wind-powered sawmill workshops, this is considered the only surviving example in the United Kingdom.
