Description

Forge Cottages is a group of cottages that date back to the 17th century, with an extension added in the 18th century, marked by the date "1712 W.H.X.M." The building is timber framed and covered in galleted, rough-dressed sandstone blocks, with red brick detailing and brick extensions on the right side. It has a plain tiled roof and forms an L-shape, with a gable end wing on the right that was likely once the forge.

The structure is two storeys high, with the wing projecting to the right. It features a moulded brick edge to the plinth and a brick plat band above the ground floor. There is a ridge stack located to the left of the center, with additional stacks on the right at the junction with the wing, on the right wing itself, and at the rear.

On the first floor, there are four diamond-pane leaded casement windows, while the ground floor has five windows with cambered heads. A door to the left of the center provides access to a lobby entry. The wing has one storey and an attic, with two gabled, boarded dormers on the left-hand return wall. Below these dormers, there is one door flanked by lights in a large arched panel, which was formerly a large double entrance, featuring end piers and a slitted, arched lunette above with Y-shaped leading. A former 'Venetian' window below has been blocked, except for two 3-light 20th-century leaded casement windows in the center.
