Description
The Village Pump and Shelter, dating from around the 1860s, is located on The Green in Ockley. It is constructed from sandstone and features a wooden roof covered with Horsham slabs. The structure has a square plan and is set on a stepped plinth. Originally, it had four round piers topped with cushion caps that are decorated with cable moulding, which support a pitched roof adorned with four gablets separated by valleys and a central wooden finial. Each gable face has bargeboards with pendant finials. The roof structure consists of a tie beam with struts. A large cast-iron pump is situated under the canopy, accompanied by a water trough. The corners are supported by shafts with capitals that hold a scalloped top with a finial. Although part of the structure was damaged in an accident during a re-survey, the cover has since been repaired. This pump is a significant feature of the Village Green.
