Description
The Tuns is a house dating from the early 18th century, located in Ockley on Stane Street. It features a timber frame set on a brick plinth, with painted weatherboard cladding and hipped plain tiled roofs. The building has a double pile plan and stands two storeys tall with attics, which are illuminated by two segmental head dormers with lead coverings.
Architectural details include fanlights over the windows and glazed 'cheeks', with an end stack to the left and rear end stacks to the right. The eaves are adorned with a modillion cornice. On the first floor, there are three 12-pane glazing bar sash windows, all with intact glazing bars, while the ground floor has two later 18th-century glazing bar sash windows, all set within architrave surrounds. The central door is made up of six panels, with the top two being glazed, and is framed by an architrave surround beneath a modillioned pediment with a pulvinated frieze.
To the left, there is one window range, and a parallel range at the rear features casement windows, with a basement storey due to the sloping site. It is reputed that this house was once a coaching inn.
