Description

The Bulls Head is a building that consists of two houses, now functioning as a shop and a public house. It dates from around 1500, was refaced in the late 17th or 18th century, and underwent restoration in 1956. The structure is timber framed and covered in colourwashed render, featuring parallel ranges with plain tiled roofs that are oriented end-on to the street. The building stands three storeys high, with stacks at the ridge of the right-hand gable and a jettied second floor. Each house has one bay. The upper floors are rusticated, with each gable displaying a decoratively leaded window on the second floor above a moulded bressumer. The first floor on the left features a square bay oriel window with four mullioned and transomed lights that have decorative leading. The ground floor on the left has wooden mock Tudor leaded windows and a pub front with a door located in the angled corner. To the right is a 20th-century shop front with a door at the end. The left-hand return front has four framed bays clad in brick, with a plat band above the ground floor and brick dentilled eaves, and features irregular 20th-century fenestration. Inside, there is a common wall plate shared by both houses. The roof over the Bulls Head has a crown post structure with plain unmoulded short crown posts resting on large cambered tie beams, which show soot marks on one side of the centre truss.
