Description
Tunsgate is a former cornmarket that now serves as a pedestrian gateway, built in 1818 by Henry Garling. The rear wall was rebuilt and the front columns were repositioned in 1933. The building features a Portland stone front with ashlar inner walls and a brick tile rear wall. It has a Tuscan portico with paired columns on pedestals that support a pediment above, which displays the Guildford Coat of Arms, along with cornucopia and agricultural symbols in the tympanum. The inner walls are rusticated, featuring a central arched panel with impost mouldings. Square windows flank the arch on the left-hand wall, while the windows on the right-hand wall are blind. There is a door located at the center of the left side, sheltered by a cornice hood. The rear elevation consists of three arches. Photographs of the building are available in the National Monuments Record.
