Description
Nos. 142 and 144 High Street are houses that have been converted into shops. They date from the early 16th and 17th centuries, with some alterations and extensions made in the 20th century. The buildings are timber framed and covered in painted stucco and wood, featuring plain-tiled roofs that gable end onto the street on the right. They stand three storeys tall, with a front stack on the left and additional stacks at the rear.
The structure consists of two bays, with a square bay projecting on the first and second floors to the left. The second floor has casement windows, while the first floor features two 12-pane, glazing-bar sash windows beneath a dentilled hood, and 8-pane sashes on the sides. To the right, there is another projecting square bay on the first and second floors, which has glazing-bar casement windows above and mullioned and transomed windows below.
The ground floor has a cove over a late 19th-century shop front, which includes panelled end pilasters and foliage scroll brackets. There is a central door set in a recess, with an additional door to the left leading to Milkhouse Gate, an old alleyway beside the building. The left-hand return wall facing the alley has its frame exposed. There are later extensions at the rear.
Inside, there is a crown-post range at the front and an 18th-century turned baluster staircase with square newels. Photographs of the building are held in the National Monuments Record.
