Description

The building at Nos. 151 and 153 High Street in Guildford, known as Campbell Insurance and the National Westminster Bank, is a house that has been converted into a bank and offices. It dates from the 18th century and features 20th-century alterations on the ground floor. The ground floor is constructed of stone, while the upper floors are made of red header-bond brick, topped with a plain-tiled roof that is hidden by a stone-coped parapet.

The building stands three storeys tall and has stacks at the rear. There is a plain band at the base of the panelled parapet, with a Portland stone cornice above. The front has four bays with 12-pane glazing-bar sash windows set beneath gauged-brick, keystoned heads. The upper floors contain four 20th-century windows each, while the ground floor features three large fixed windows flanked by alternating piers made up of four thin pilaster strips, which are topped with acanthus and anthemion caps.

A triglyph frieze runs across the ground floor, adorned with classical roundel motifs in the metopes. A shallow balcony extends over the ground floor, with a hanging sign projecting from the end. The entrance doors are located at the right end of the building. At the rear, there is a gabled and weatherboard range to the left, which includes a tripartite sash window, and a white boarded range at the first floor that is set at right angles.
