Description

Nos 132 and 134 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from the late 18th century. It is built of yellow stock brick and features three parallel ranges with hipped plain tiled roofs, which are obscured by a stone-coped parapet. The building stands three storeys high and has a plat band above the ground floor.

On the second floor, there is a Venetian style window with 8-pane side lights and a round arched, 12-pane glazing-bar sash window in the centre, all under a gauged-brick head. This window is adorned with D-plan wire-work balcony railings. The first floor boasts a large wooden canted-bay oriel window, which has one wide, 12-pane glazing-bar sash window on each face, flanked by jamb shafts that are capped with octagonal tops, and features wirework railings in front.

The ground floor to the left has a 19th-century shop front with square-panelled stall risers, fluted end pilasters, and a dentilled lintel above. There is an impressive Ware-style pedimented doorcase with an open modillioned pediment, supported by three-quarter Ionic columns that hold up an entablature. Above the door is a fanlight with four fielded octagonal panels over two flush octagonal panels. Stone steps lead up to the entrance, flanked by 19th-century railings that are decorated with roundel bands at the top and base, and have end spindle standards.

Inside, the first floor features a low relief plaster ceiling with a central rose and floral rococo-style scrolls, along with plaster panels surrounding it.
