Description

Nos 122, 124, and 126, which includes Rowleys Wine Bar to the rear, are two houses that have been divided and are now part shops. They date from the mid-16th century, with extensions from the 17th and 18th centuries, and alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are timber framed, with whitewashed render on the front left and colour-washed roughcast on the right. The rear is clad in brick, and they have plain tiled roofs with gable ends facing the street.

The structure is three storeys high with a triple gabled front, featuring a central stack and additional stacks at the rear. The second floor of the gables is jettied, with the left gable partially under-built and 19th-century bargeboards above. Each gable has one three-light leaded casement window on the second floor under a moulded lintel, and there is a four-light leaded square bay window on the first floor to the left. On the right side of the first floor, there are two square bay oriels supported by rendered cove supports, beneath a large early 18th-century modillioned cornice.

The ground floor left features a 19th-century shop front with a coved lintel and a panelled pilaster at the end, decorated with guttae. There is a deeply recessed entrance with a panelled ceiling in a late 17th or 18th-century style, with the panels bordered by bold bands of foliage and fruit carving. To the right, there is a 20th-century shop front. At the rear, the thin frame is exposed inside the brick cladding.
