Description

This is a house, originally dating to the 17th century, with a significant rebuild in the late 1870s. It has since been divided into separate dwellings. The house incorporates a cartouche, bearing the date 1636, which records a freehold sale of the property, including rights to common pasture and turbary.

The building is timber-framed with red and blue chequer-work brick; the upper section features a square panel frame with mortar-rendered ironstone infilling, while the gables have brick infilling. It has plain tiled roofs. The house is two storeys high with attics, featuring a brick dentil band above the ground floor and jettied gables. The front of the building has a double gable design facing the street, accentuated by elaborate, carved bargeboards depicting animals and fruit, topped with pendant finials. A square, corbelled stack is located at the rear. There is one attic casement window in each gable, and two windows on each floor below, with the ground floor windows set beneath cambered arches. A gabled porch features cusped bargeboards and a central spike finial. The upper windows have half-open, diamond mullions set within rubblestone walls. The 1636 cartouche details the original freehold sale. This is an early example of rebuilding in the 17th century vernacular style.
