Description
Anchor Cottage is a house that dates back to the early 17th century but was refronted and extended in the mid-19th century. The building has a timber frame that is refronted in red brick on the ground floor, with a rendered upper section. It features a tiled roof with decorative wooden bargeboards and brick chimneystacks. The gable end facing the street includes a circular window in the attic, a first-floor sash window with vertical glazing bars only, and a tripartite sash window on the ground floor. The entrance front has two additional sashes with vertical glazing bars only. There is a 20th-century bow window on the ground floor and an early pedimented canopy supported by ornate posts above the entrance door. At the rear, there is an external red brick chimneystack and a one-storey extension. The street front also has an additional bay made of painted brick with a cambered sash window that adjoins Pilgrim's Earth.
Inside, the early 17th-century timber frame is visible, featuring a shallow arched tie beam and a queen strut side purlin roof. Although the framing of the original cross wing has been overbuilt, some arched wind bracing remains. The cross wing was truncated and extended in the early 19th century. Many internal features from the 19th century are still present, including panelling, doors, architraves, fire surrounds, and the staircase.
