Description

Nos. 87 and 89 Portsmouth Road are a pair of large semi-detached houses built in 1883 by architect R. Norman Shaw, with extensions added in 1911 by Ernest Newton. The houses feature orange-red brick at the lower level, with brown fishscale tile hanging above and plain tiled roofs. They are two storeys tall with attics, showcasing two gabled dormers on the left and a flat-roofed casement dormer to the right of the center. The right side has three storeys, highlighted by a projecting gabled square bay.

Massive cross-ridge stacks are located to the right of center, with multiple stacks at the rear and on the left end. The left side has two gabled dormers with leaded casement windows. A prominent 6-light window spans across the front, with the end lights wrapping around the corners. Below, there are mullioned and transomed leaded windows that break through the eaves, supported by roughcast coves. The right-hand projecting bay features continuous leaded fenestration, with four lights on either side of a moulded central mullion on the second floor, and similar arrangements on the first floor.

The ground floor includes two 3-light mullioned and transomed windows to the right of center, and a projecting square bay window to the left. Wide panelled doors are located at each end, topped with 4-centre arched heads and moulded surrounds. There are flanking windows, with a 4-light window to the right of the left-hand door and a 2-light window to the left of the right-hand door. A gabled extension is set back to the right, featuring a chamfered corner and leaded windows. Single-storey hipped roof extensions are present at the left end. The building was formerly listed with Nos. 3 and 4 Rectory Place as one item.
