Description

The lychgate to Shalford Cemetery, built around 1886, is constructed of Bargate rubblestone with Portland stone quoins. It features open timber-framed upper walls and a plain tile roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles. The structure consists of one wide bay and two narrow bays, with buttresses that have moulded offsets. Inside, there are arch braces connecting the posts to the wall-plate, and three arch-braced king-post trusses. The lychgate also has moulded barge-boards and metal cross-finials on the gables. A replacement wooden double gate, fitted with re-used wavy strap-hinges and decorative ironwork on the top rail, provides access. Inside, there is a side bench supported by carved brackets. This lychgate is an attractive feature that has strong group value with the cemetery chapel it serves.
