Description

The Firs is a detached house built around 1834, with some minor alterations made later. The building is constructed of brick faced in stucco, topped with a slate low hipped roof featuring ridge tiles and stuccoed chimneystacks.

The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front elevation with three bays. It has a rectangular four-room plan with a central staircase and a later single-storey coal-store extension at the rear. The front porch is modern but retains an early to mid-19th century lead tented canopy with a moulded cornice. The original six-panel door features 20th-century coloured glazing in the upper panels and a rectangular fanlight with geometric pattern glazing bars. There is also a porch on the west elevation that has a lead canopy. The roof has boxed eaves and the windows are six-over-six pane sashes, with some blind openings. Most of the external joinery is original.

Inside, there is an open-string staircase that rises in a single flight and features a landing balustrade, a circular newel post, stick balusters, and a mahogany handrail that terminates in a scroll. The interior retains original joinery, including shutters and some simple chimneypieces, along with a hob grate in the eastern rear room, alongside later 19th and early 20th-century features.

The house is notable for being a well-preserved late Regency property that maintains its internal layout and several original features. The plot of land it occupies was sold in 1833, suggesting its construction shortly thereafter.
