Description
The County First School was built in 1855 by Henry Woodyer. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with brick quoins and dressings, and has plain tiled roofs. The building has two storeys in its gable end to the right, and one storey to the centre and left. Gabled wings project from the ends, featuring brick string courses. The right-hand gable has one casement window to the first floor, set within a pointed arched surround with brick infill above the window, and another casement window below. A full-height cambered-head casement window is present on the left end, and three half-hipped dormers are set into the centre of the roof. Buttresses flank the central window. A C20 extension downwards to the left-hand window is visible. There are two diagonal stacks to the left of the right-hand cross wing. The front features an arched door within a deep, recessed porch with arched, chamfered, brick-edged entrance, positioned in the re-entrant angle with the right-hand cross wing. A steep, narrow gable above the porch holds a bell.
The return front, facing Tillingbourne Road, has six half-hipped dormers set into the eaves. A central, taller gabled bay has a tile-hung gable and two windows flanking buttresses. There are two buttresses either side of this bay. A gabled wing projects from the left end with a large end casement, with a chimney visible in the re-entrant angle.
