Description
The coal and wine tax post, located 280 yards north of the west end, dates from around 1861 and was made by Henry Grissell. It is approximately 4 and a half feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top, with a City of London shield on the front. The pier is inscribed with the lettering "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42", and the maker's name is found on the rear. This post marks the boundary where duty was payable on coal, a practice that dates back to the 1660s.
