Description
This is a group of almshouses located at 79 to 85 Circle Road, including 2 Chestnut Walk and 1 North Avenue, built around 1912, possibly designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. The buildings are constructed of red brick, featuring a red brick plinth, band, panels, and quoin pilasters. They have swept, hipped roofs covered with plain tiles and two central ridge stacks. The structure is two stories high with three bays, and the outer bays contain casement windows. The central feature is a full-height round arch flanked by pilasters. There are short cloister wings supported by stone columns, connecting the main block to the wings. These wings are also two stories high with two bays, quoined pilasters, and entrances in recessed bays at either end of the cloister walks. The wings at the rear and ends include 2 Chestnut Walk on the left and 1 North Avenue on the right. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide housing for thrifty elderly individuals.
