Description
Westwood House (East) and West Lodge, along with associated gate piers, are a pair of lodges dating to around 1800, originally serving Painshill House. They are constructed of rendered material with hipped slate roofs and rendered stacks positioned centrally and at the front. The lodges are arranged in a “T” shape, featuring projecting gabled bays to the left of the east lodge and the right of the west lodge. They are two storeys high, with a string course defining the ground floor and deep, bracketed eaves. The inner faces of the lodges each have two sash windows on the first floor, while the rear has glazing bar sash windows. Doors are located centrally on the inner side of each lodge, facing each other, set within an arched recess that rises to break into the first floor. The street frontages feature an arched niche at the centre of each lodge, containing a garlanded urn on a pedestal, with an apron moulding above bearing the inscriptions “East Lodge” and “West Lodge”. Rusticated square gate piers, approximately 8 feet high and attached between the lodges, have oval paterae in the frieze. These piers support cast iron railings and gates.
