Description

House, dating from 1778 and altered in the 19th century, now divided into separate dwellings. It was originally built by Richard Jupp for Benjamin Bond Hopkins, with later alterations by Decimus Burton. The house is rendered with hipped slate roofs and multiple rendered chimney stacks. It is two storeys over a basement, with rusticated detailing to the central section and dentilled eaves. The main three-bay block features a bowed centre. Sash windows are found on the first floor, tripartite in the outer bays, with flat hood surrounds over the bow bay windows. Ground floor windows in the outer bays are casements, with arched windows in the central, bowed bay. A projecting 19th-century porch is centrally located, approached by a flight of five steps with an iron rail to the left. A six-panel door is set in an arched recess to the left of the porch, with an Ionic pilaster surround, urns, and roundel decoration above. A single-storey wing extends to the right, and a further three-bay, two-storey wing projects forward to the left, containing additional entrances. The garden front features bowed bays extending through two storeys, with a single-storey, Doric columned loggia in the centre, now glazed. Inside, a fine oval entry hall is in an Adam style, with a stone staircase featuring a wrought iron balustrade and a domed top light. The central drawing room on the garden front has a fireplace attributed to Flaxman. The house stands on a different site from the original Painshill built for Charles Hamilton, an early English landscape gardener. The gardens of the original house survive largely intact and are undergoing restoration.
