Description

The Bellman Hangar at Brooklands Museum is a historic structure built in the late 1940s for Vickers-Armstrong, commissioned by the Ministry of Aircraft Production. It was manufactured by Head Wrightson and Co. Ltd of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. The hangar features corrugated iron cladding over a steel frame made of rolled sections, with both the walls and roof constructed using standard units that are joined at the corners by a standard corner unit. It has a rectangular plan measuring 180 feet by 95 feet, with a height of 25 feet and sliding doors located in the end gables. The interior showcases the exposed steel frame.

Construction of this hangar began on September 16th, during the height of the Battle of Britain, following a devastating Luftwaffe raid on the Vickers factory at Brooklands. It was completed by December 12th. The hangars were designed with a clear internal height of 25 feet to accommodate Vickers Wellington bombers for essential repair work. Approximately 400 Bellman hangars were constructed at RAF and Ministry of Aircraft Production factory airfields, most of which had a lower height of 16 feet 6 inches that could not accommodate Wellingtons.

Originally aligned north-south on the Motor Circuit's finishing straight, the Bellman hangar was relocated to its current site off the finishing straight in 2017.
