Description
The flying boat hangars at the former RAF Mount Batten were built in 1917. They are constructed from corrugated iron and asbestos sheeting over a steel frame, featuring a rectangular plan. The structure includes two side-opening 'Type-F' hangars that are connected by ancillary outshuts and a central winch house, with former workshops and offices in rear lean-tos. The hangars are supported by steel stanchions, each held up by steel rakers, and have steel-framed roof trusses with a lattice girder spanning the main door opening. The central winch house is single-storey and has a sliding door. These hangars, similar to the notable group at Calshott in Hampshire, are an important example of early aviation structures and are linked to a significant history of defensive structures in the Plymouth area.
