Description
Dutton's Cafe, originally built as an artillery store and magazine in 1847, was designed by Colonel J. Oldfield, the Commanding Royal Engineer of the Western District. The building is constructed from coursed and dressed stone with a flat bombproof roof and has a rectangular plan. The south elevation features a single storey with ashlar lintels over a central paired entrance that has two late 20th-century doors, and a former entrance on the right that has been converted into a window. There is a rifle slit to the left and a plat band beneath the parapet that extends around the entire building. The north elevation, which is two storeys high, has rifle slits on the first floor, along with two late 19th-century inserted window openings and a doorway leading to the ground floor magazine. The interior has not been inspected.
Historically, this building was part of the scheduled outer defences surrounding the late 17th-century Citadel, which underwent continuous modernization to keep up with advancements in ordnance. The defences in the Plymouth area represent a significant collection illustrating the evolution of coastal defense from the 16th century. After the construction of Madeira Road in the late 19th century, the building's function changed, and minor alterations, such as the insertion of windows, were made, leaving the mid-19th-century structure largely intact and maintaining its relationship with both the Citadel and the listed harbour walls below.
