Description
The Willows is a building that originally served as two cottages, now converted into a house. It dates back to the 17th century, with later alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure was originally timber-framed and features 18th-century coursed limestone rubble, with late 19th-century brick walling on the left end wall and left bay. The roof is gabled and thatched, with end stacks that are rendered on the left and made of brick on the right.
The building has a four-unit plan and is one storey with an attic, presenting a four-window range. There are timber lintels over 20th-century doors and casements, as well as 20th-century dormer casements. At the rear, there is an 18th-century stone and thatch outshut to the right and a 20th-century outshut to the left.
Inside, the building features a central 17th-century timber-framed chimney stack, which is a rare survival. There is a chamfered central beam and an early 18th-century fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. The right side of the building has a two-bay queen-post roof with clasped purlins.
