Description

Lower Farmhouse is a farmhouse, dating to the 18th century but with medieval and 17th-century origins. A datestone indicates the year 1726. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with a gabled stone slate roof and brick ridge and end stacks. It is arranged in an L-shape, with a projecting wing to the front right. The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic. The long, one-window range to the left has a cambered brick arch over two 19th-century eight-pane sashes to the left of a 20th-century door. The projecting front wing has similar window arches, including an eight-pane sash and a mid-19th century horned sash. A bread oven is located at the rear of the building. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest. An excavation in 1972 revealed 13th-century pottery and a medieval hearth, and the wall thicknesses suggest medieval origins with 17th-century alterations. The building’s plan is illustrated in "Duck End: a group of Oxfordshire Houses" by A. Pacey.
