Description

The gateway and walls to the Almshouses in Chipping Norton were built in 1640, at the same time as the Almshouses themselves. The structure is made of ashlar stone and features a cambered archway with the inscription 'Remember the Poor' carved above it. There is a moulded cornice that rises to a bevelled plinth, which supports a strapwork panel. Originally, there were three ball finials—two on either side and one on top of the panel—but these have since disappeared. Between the stone piers, there is a 19th-century plank gate with plain arched battens and studs. Low stone walls extend from the gateway to both ends of the Almshouses plot.
