Description

The Bear Hotel is an inn that has been converted into a house, shop, and workshop, located in Woodstock Market Place. It dates from the early 18th century, with a 17th-century rear right wing, and was refronted in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of squared and coursed limestone, with limestone rubble at the rear, and features a gabled stone slate roof with brick end stacks and rear ridge stacks. It has an L-plan layout with a rear right wing, standing two storeys tall with an attic and a six-window range.

The front facade includes a central 20th-century door leading to a passage, a late 19th-century panelled and glazed door to the left of centre, and another 20th-century door to the right. There is a wide canted bay window with 20th-century lights on the right and a late 19th-century canted bay window on the left. The windows have stone lintels and late 19th-century plate-glass sashes. The building features an 18th-century coved cornice and three gabled roof dormers with plate-glass sashes.

At the rear, there is a stair-turret in the centre, with 18th-century wings to the left that have concrete tile roofs. The rear right includes 17th and 18th-century wings with stone slate and asbestos sheet roofs, as well as an early 19th-century workshop that is three storeys tall with a four-window range and a concrete tile roof. The interior has chamfered beams in the front range, while the 17th-century rear wing features stop-chamfered beams. Although No. 9 was not inspected, it is likely to be of interest. The building was known as the Crown Inn in the 18th century when it had a central carriageway.
