Description
1 and 3 Park Street are two houses that are now part of the Bear Hotel. No. 3, located on the right, is an early 19th-century rebuild of an earlier house. It features a front made of limestone ashlar, with Flemish bond brick on the sides and rear, and limestone rubble on the rear right wing. The building has a gabled stone slate roof with a brick ridge stack and end stacks. It is arranged in an L-plan with a rear right wing and consists of two storeys and an attic, displaying a symmetrical five-window range. There is a keyed flat stone arch over a 20th-century door, framed by an open-pedimented doorcase with pilasters. Keyed flat stone arches are present over an early 19th-century tripartite sash window to the right, a later 19th-century tripartite horned sash window to the left, and first-floor six-pane sashes. Hipped dormers with two-light casements are also featured. A 20th-century extension is located at the rear.
The house to the left, No. 1, is also from the early 19th century, constructed with coursed limestone rubble and a stucco front. It has gables with a stone slate roof and brick end stacks, following a one-unit plan. This house has two storeys and an attic, with a one-window range. It includes an early 19th-century beaded six-panelled door with an overlight to the left, an early 19th-century bow window with glazing bar casements, and a bowed tripartite sash window on the first floor. There is a hipped dormer with a two-light casement. The interior of No. 1 features an early 19th-century straight-flight staircase with stick balusters and 17th-century chamfered beams.
